In Oliver, Literacy Kitchen series is offered in partnership with Community Action Plan for Children, through Desert Sun Counselling. The series consists of 5 -6 kitchen sessions, each with a different focus. Clients read recipes and learn vocabulary, preparation techniques and how to measure; they discuss safety and health topics and experience a variety of foods. The group is limited to six participants, currently representing different nationalities.
During the cooking sessions, people involved with the venue in other capacities often stop by, giving clients an opportunity to interact. During cooking and while eating after, conversation ranges from food-related topics to relationships, cultural similarities and differences, and community events.
