UNBOX

BECOME AN AGENT OF CHANGE

UNBOX is a collaborative initiative with the aim to reduce racism and discrimination within the South Okanagan through active engagement. You will have the opportunity to explore and learn more about racism in our region. As a participant, you will gain tools to become an agent of change in our communities.

The Box & Inspiration

Unbox is an anti-racism educational resource modeled on You Need This Box. It focuses on the experiences of racism by new immigrants and other racialized community members. Unbox encourages you to conduct an “audit” of the community using the lens of an ally - identifying areas that preserve racial inequities embedded in our society. In addition, you will have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and appreciation for various cultures represented in your community.

Collaboration

The South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services Society (SOICS) in collaboration with the Penticton Public Library and Okanagan Regional Library (Summerland & Osoyoos) are addressing the issues of racism and discrimination in the South Okanagan by engaging the community in learning about these issues towards becoming advocates and allies.

The resource materials were developed in close collaboration with the OneWorld Youth Crew and the Newcomer Council forming the Project Advisory Committee. Working with these groups ensured that people experiencing racism have a strong voice and guiding hand in the project.

We understand that the only way to make a lasting change is to build understanding and action within the whole community of South Okanagan, and we hope that you are interested in being a part of this program!
