As newcomers enter the South Okanagan, SOICS provides them with the tools to help them adjust to their new lives in our community.
Through a series of workshops, the Life Skills Development Program enables participants to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to and make connections within the area.

Below is a list of life skills workshops provided throughout the year!

Computer Lessons
This beginner-friendly workshop helps participants feel comfortable using a computer. You will learn basic skills like using a mouse and keyboard, opening programs, managing files, and using the internet and email.
The workshop also teaches how to use communication tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams to join meetings and chat with others. Hands-on practice is provided in a supportive and easy-to-understand setting.

Newcomer Workshop Series
These workshop series are designed to support newcomers as they settle in Canada. Participants will learn about their legal rights, where to get help with discrimination, and what supports and resources are available and much more!
The series also covers important information about housing and rentals in Canada, including tenant rights and responsibilities. Safety planning and personal safety are discussed to help newcomers feel informed, confident, and supported in their new community.

General Health & Wellness
These workshops are designed to support overall health and well-being. Participants will learn about navigating the Canadian health system, accessing medical and community resources, and maintaining physical and mental wellness.
Sessions may include group discussions, talking circles, and practical tips to help participants feel informed, supported, and confident in taking care of themselves and their families.
